Length: 43' Wing span: 54' 4' Weight: 18,000lbs Power: A.S. Double Mamba ASMD-3 Details: Anti-Submarine Registration: XG760 The Fairey Gannet was the last in a long line of Fairey Aircraft for the Royal Navy. The Gannet was developed along with its Double Mamba Engine, as an anti-submarine hunter/killer aircraft the Double Mamba with its ability to shut down one engine for cruising yet having twin-engine power for take off and operational necessity, gave the aircraft great flexibility and its deep fuselage had adequate room for a large weapons bay and a search radar. It was a three seat aircraft with a Pilot, Navigator and Radar Operator. It entered service in 1953 and was not only with the Royal Navy, but also with the Australian and German Navies during the 1950s and 60s. See more aircraft at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mikehill. also http://www.flightsim.com The panels were designed to the best of my ability with limited information from old photo resources and 40 years since I serviced these aircraft from 1962 to 1963 for 849 HQ Sqdn. RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall, England. The Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm operated three carrier borne Flights attached to the HMS Hermes, HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal Authors comment: XG760 probably was not attached to 849 Sqdn, and info. regarding its service would be welcomed. Since this design was by Mike Hill in Australia, it was most likely attached to the Australian Navy.
